PM Aide Rebutts US Administration - Yasukuni Criticism was "Caviling"
Koichi Hagiuda, an LDP member of the Lower House , special aide to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, spoke at the LDP headquarters on January 17th. Referring to the Obama administration's "disappointment" over the PM's visit to Yasukuni Shrine, Hagiuda said, "US government under the Republican party never caviled at us this way. This is happening because it is the Democratic party's administration; because of President Obama."
This statement may have wide repercussions, because it was made by one of the key members of the majority party, who is close to the centre of Abe administration. Hagiuda's talk was held among the party's young members' bureau, and Hagiuda attended the meeting as past president of the bureau. The meeting was not open to the media. Asked by Kyodo News Agency, Hagiuda admitted his statement, and added, "I did not mean to criticize the Obama administration. The statement was uttered from my wish to explain the Japanese position on the issue."
